Juneteenth: Why the federal holiday is a sensitive topic?

Juneteenth: Why the federal holiday is a sensitive topic?

Juneteenth is a commemoration of the emancipation of enslaved individuals in 1865.

It was declared a federal holiday in the United States in 2021.

However, some corporations and institutions appropriate Juneteenth for commercial purposes.

Recently, Walmart attempted to cash in on the holiday with their Juneteenth ice-cream.

The Children’s Museum of Indianapolis had a menu item labelled “Juneteenth Watermelon Salad” promoting a “Juneteenth Jamboree” event.

The fruit was a symbol of the freedom of Southern African Americans who grew and sold watermelons after Emancipation.

The museum removed the item from the menu and issued an apology on Facebook.
